Miroslav Černý is Associate Professor in the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Ostrava’s Faculty of Arts where he teaches sociolinguistics, language typology, pre-modern English, English medieval literature, and Native American studies. In his research, he used to concentrate on the sociolinguistic and pragmatic analysis of medical discourse (see Discourse of Medicine Revisited, Ostrava: University of Ostrava, 2012). More recently, however, his focus has shifted towards the study of Native North American languages and literatures. Černý has published a number of studies in the field, and edited several Czech translations of American Indian prose (e.g. by James Welch), while he himself has translated two volumes of Native American mythology.
